HOW TO SIZE YOUR HORSE'S HOOF -- THE OLD MAC'S WAY
SIZE SELECTION

Prior to measuring it is very important that your horse's hooves have been recently trimmed ensuring all flare is removed.

If you intend to wear Old Mac's over metal shoes for transport then you must take your measurement after shoeing.

The unique design feature of Old Mac's allows for width and length adjustment to suit most individual horse's hooves and also caters for natural hoof growth between trimming.

The hoof Does Not have to be a perfect shape for the boot to fit securely. The length may exceed the width and the boot will still work correctly. The size chart below allows for 5-10mm 3/16"-3/8" extra room either side of the hoof and 5mm 3/16" in the length - an ideal fit.

*Updated version The size selection steps below have been modified to provide simple easy to read instructions. This allows you to circle the CLOSEST SIZE. ( On the old version you are asked to 'circle the next size up' )

Step 1. Measure the LENGTH, measuring from the toe to the buttress of the heel. On the size chart below circle the - closest measurement - to your horse's length measurement.

Step 2. Measure the WIDTH. Be sure to take the measurement across the widest part of the hoof. Circle the closest measurement on the size chart below.

Step 3. The largest circled measurement is the correct size for your horse.

How To Fit Your Old Mac's Boots
Fitting Instructions
Having properly trimmed your horse's hooves and selected the appropriate size
Old Mac's we would now like to take you through the easy steps of fitting Old Mac's on your horse.
Should you have any doubts about your Old Mac's size selection please refer to the
size selection consult "My Fine Equine" or contact Old Mac's directly.

Step 1. Fully open up the Cordura® cover ensuring that no Velcro® areas are touching and that the cover is pulled well forward.

Step 2. Facing the rear of your horse, pick up the hoof and slip it, TOE FIRST into the boot. Place the sole of the hoof firmly down into the sole of the Old Mac's - pulling the heel of the boot over the bulb. Place your horses hoof on the ground.

Step 3. Wrap the main webbing strap around the pastern bone - from the back of the hoof around the front and then to the back again. Feed the strap through the metal loop, pulling firmly to secure it then fasten the Velcro®. If after securing the main webbing strap you cannot comfortably slip a finger between the horse's pastern and the webbing strap you have secured it too tightly.

Step 4. Ensuring both side flaps are firmly pushed against the hoof wall, secure the cover by pushing both sides towards the rear in a downward direction. The collar of the boot should be molded around the pastern bone. Secure the cover at the rear by pulling both ends firmly around the heel, overlapping the Velcro® evenly (refer pictures on page 10), and then fastening. Firmly buckle up outside strap.

Step 5. Old Mac's are now securely in place. As a guide the middle of the four rivets on the front of the boot should be aligned through the center of the hoof and the pastern bone.

Your best friend will love you... even more!

Old Mac's Fitting Procedure Check List
Mac's should be fitted as the boots are marked - 'LEFT' and 'RIGHT', with the securing buckle placed on the outside of each hoof.

After you have placed your horse's hoof into the boot you need to ensure that there is firm contact between the heel of the hoof and the sole of the boot. To avoid part of the rear of the hoof sitting up on the wall of the Old Mac's sole you may need to remove 1-2 mm of the hoof wall. This will allow the hoof to correctly slip into the boot, while also ensuring there is room for hoof growth.

It is very important to ensure the entire 'horny hoof' sits within the Old Mac's outsole. Only the bulbs of the hoof should make contact with the leather rear of the boot. If the heels of the hoof extend past the outsole and are standing on the rear of the boot you have selected a size too small.

To Ensure Old Mac's are put on straight. (Refer to picture in Step Five of fitting instructions)
Particular attention should be paid to securing the main webbing strap. This strap should be secured firmly around the pastern. The main webbing strap helps secure the bulbs of the hoof into the rear of the boot as well as prevent the boot turning while on the hoof.

After securing the main webbing strap if you cannot comfortably slip a finger between the horse's pastern and the webbing strap you have secured it too tightly.

After the cover has been secured ensure Velcro® ends are overlapped in the correct position.
Working your horse in incorrect sized Old Mac's can lead to chafing. Correct size selection will ensure maximum performance.

After your horse has warmed up check your Old Mac's are still fitted squarely and securely on the hoof. If there is excessive turning of the boot on the hoof:
