Advanced Biological Concepts® has been responding to uveitis with nutritive therapy and has developed a special grain mix to support the immune system and reduce recurrent episodes of inflammation. The mix was originally formulated for a horse named "Master Jack" two years ago. Since that time there has been several improvements and "Master Jack" has not had a reoccurrence since February 1996. Master Jack Grain Mix is composed of several antioxidants, natural anti-inflammatories, enzymes and other valuable nutrients.

IN ADDITION TO THE GRAIN MIX : A.B.C.'s Free Choice Stress System needs to be available for the horses at all times. Our natural parasite control program N.O.M.S. has also shown to benefit horses being treated for uveitis.

Treatment of "Master Jack"
Initial treatment included topical corticosteroids.
This was discontinued and Master Jack Grain Mix was introduced.
Aspirin was included into the diet at 5 grams per day then reduced to 2 grams, then eliminated. Presently, Master Jack is being maintained with Master Jack Grain Mix.

Note: A white hue was very apparent in "Master Jack's" right eye. That hue is no longer visible.

Testimony:
Master Jack clears the horses eye and keeps the clouds away. If he is without Master Jack for a week his cloudy eye returns.

OVERVIEW
Equine recurrent Uveitis, sometimes known as moon blindness, is a disease of the horse's eye that can be caused by
many different things -- bacteria, virus, parasites, or trauma.

Signs that an eye is in distress include redness, swelling, pus, pupil constriction in the dark, cloudiness, squinting,
and photophobia. Uveitis is often diagnosed as something far less serious and valuable treatment time is lost.
If not treated aggressively from the onset, there is less chance of saving sight in one or both eyes. Unfortunately,
even with very aggressive treatment, some eyes cannot be saved, but in other cases the disease can be halted or
at least slowed down.

When the uveitis first starts, if the original cause can be determined then additional treatment may be used depending
on the cause. The usual short term treatment includes atropine to dilate the eye, followed by either a steroid or antibiotic.
Treatment must be prescribed by a veterinarian because if a steroid is used when the eye is ulcerated, blindness
can result. Bute, banamine or aspirin are used as anti-inflammatory agents along with the other medications.

After the original episode has been successfully treated, the inflammation and signs will disappear and the eye may
appear to be normal or almost normal. At sometime in the future, if it is recurrent uveitis, a set of circumstances will
cause the eye to have another episode. The circumstances can be internal; external such as wind, dust, pollen; stress
of any kind; or due to stopping the anti-inflammatory medicine prematurely. With recurrent uveitis, the episodes
continue to occur. Each one lasts a little longer and each time the eye loses a little more sight.

Long term maintenance treatment will often include aspirin, bute or banamine on a regular basis in an attempt to keep
the inflammation from starting. Many horses wear fly masks to cut down on the light and owners are also using
dietary supplements to help build up the horse.

MANAGING AND TREATING UVEITIS

For about 10 years I managed my little Arab mare Posey who started with Uveitis before I knew what the weepy eyes were
about. It went on for several years before having an actual "flare-up" where the lid got really hot and a cloud appeared
in her eye. (moon blindness some call it). I put her on the Homeopathic Uveitis spray and she didn't have an episode for
over a year so I thought she was "cured". She would have 1 in just 1 eye about once a year and then towards the end
of her life at 36 1/2 she might 2 X's a year. I would give her 10 bayer aspirin crushed up 2 X a day in her food, and put her
on the Master Jack for Uveitis along with her daily 8 oz of ABC PLUS which she has been on all along to help keep her
immune system up to the best possible. During a flare up I would also 2 X daily rub some neosporin or a triple antiob ointment
equivalent generic brand to keep it from becoming infected during the flare up.
She wore a UV protecting fly mask 24/7 as she had full access to the outdoors
from her shelter. Here is a pic of Posey and her son General, she was 36 and he 26. Her weight and energy was

Dear ABC, This is a big thank you! My 17-year-old horse AW HABOD has been my best friend and companion for over 14 years.

HABOD has over 2600 miles in AERC endurance ride comptetions.

Four years ago he was forced into retirement due to a pasture accident that resulted in a broken coffin bone. After two years HABOD just was not doing well and x-rays showed the coffin bone had healed properly so it must be another problem. One year ago he was diagnosed as having an advanced case of LOW RINGBONE in the same leg. I had him injected and came back several weeks later for another and the vet almost could not insert the needle into the joint as the arthritis was growing so rapidly. I was totally crushed by the news that HABOD would probably not be rideable by spring and in constant discomfort.
